1881 Wicks's
rotary typecasting machine patented, and used within the newspaper
industry until the introduction of hot metal composing machines
at the end of the century
Introduction
of photographic process for reproducing illustrations - photogravure,
collotype, photo-etched relief half-tone blocks
Concerns about
standards of printing prompted Andrew Tuer to set up the Printers'
International Specimen Exchange. There was a revival of interest
in book design which culminated in 'The Book Beautiful' of the 1890s
