This simple
introduction to geology is an example of the many shilling or two
shilling books published by Routledge for 'all kinds of popular
instruction'. They were carefully designed to be comfortable in
the hand or pocket, and especially suited to urban readers now able
to take advantage of holiday excursion fares to the country or seaside.
Despite the low price, these volumes were often generously illustrated
- in this case with eight plates engraved by the Dalziel Brothers.
