Ward
& Lock
Ward & Lock
closely followed Routledge as the most prolific publisher of yellowbacks,
producing series such as the Run and Read Library, and early yellowback
editions of Mrs. Braddon's novels, as well as popular non-fiction
works. Henry James's The American appeared for the first
time in England in 1877, as number 32 in their Favourite Authors
series. The publication was unauthorized, and James complained that
it was 'vilely printed', with 'whole paragraphs omitted'. The volumes
shown here are typical examples of Ward & Lock's early small format
and later large format yellowbacks.
