Humphrey Gawthrop (notes)
Abstract
A biography and genealogical account of George Ellis (1753-1815), Jamaican land-owner, Whig politician and man of letters, friend of Sir Walter Scott, Richard Heber and George Canning. It is also possible that via Scott he was the inspiration for Emily Bronte's choice of the nom de plume Ellis Bell.
