Award-winning Canadian comics creator Emily Carroll discusses her chilling graphic stories

'It came from the woods. Most strange things do...'

The spine-tingling subjects and styles of the Gothic Tradition are alive and thriving today in webcomics on the internet and in graphic novels. The acclaimed and award-winning Canadian comics creator Emily Carroll discusses her debut collection of chilling graphic stories, Through The Woods (Faber & Faber). Hailed by Michel Faber as 'beautiful, beguiling and thrillingly eerie', Through The Woods was chosen as The Observer Graphic Novel of the Month by Rachel Cooke: 'Carroll's talent is immense: the mood of these stories is Brothers Grimm by way of Patricia Highsmith or Stephen King, while her drawings, so fluidly lavish and atmospheric, seem to channel Edward Gorey'.

Carroll makes her exclusive London speaking engagement at the British Library as part of this year's Comica Festival. Carroll will be in conversation with the celebrated British graphic novelist Isabel Greenberg, whose first book in 2013, The Encyclopedia of Early Earth (Jonathan Cape), was picked by Time magazine as one of the 10 best books of the year.

Emily Carroll was born in London, Ontario in 1983. In addition to the many short online comics found on her website, her work has been featured in numerous anthologies. 'His Face All Red', included in Through The Woods, garnered two Stumptown Comics awards for Best Artist and Best Colorist, and the 2011 Joe Shuster Award for Outstanding Webcomic Creator. Emily currently lives with her wife Kate and their large orange cat in Stratford, Ontario. Visit her at http://www.emcarroll.com
