An evening celebrating the bicentenary of Charlotte Brontë's birth
A sophisticated evening of conversation, readings and gin to mark the bicentenary of Charlotte Brontë’s birth has been created by artist, author and Brontë curator, Charlotte Cory.
Joining her will be Dame Jacqueline Wilson, one of the nation’s favourite writers and recently appointed Ambassador for Charlotte, and Ann Dinsdale, curator and Collections Manager at the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth.
Enjoy a complimentary G&T courtesy Colonel Fox’s London Dry, a fabulous gin flavoured with juniper, coriander, angelica, cassis, orange peel and the Victorian sweetener, liquorice and 1724, a premium quality tonic water.
The evening also marks the final stop for the Soane Museum’s Jane Eyre Live Reading which will have toured across London during the day. Guests are invited to help the Soane ‘finish’ the novel by stepping onto a mobile 'Fifth Plinth' – inspired by the famous plinths in Trafalgar Square – and read a short extract. Discover more about the live reading here.
Dame Jacqueline Wilson is the best-selling author of over a hundred books, and was Children's Laureate from 2005 to 2007. She has long been a fan of Charlotte Brontë and was appointed Ambassador for Charlotte in a new initiative revealed as part of the Brontë Society's celebrations surrounding the bicentenary of Charlotte Brontë.
Ann Dinsdale is the Collections Manager at the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth. She is in charge of researching, curating and caring for items for the world's largest collection of documents and items associated with the Brontës. She has worked for the Brontë Society for over 25 years and is the author of several authoritative books about the Brontës and Haworth.
Charlotte Cory is an artist, best known for her Visitoriana – a complete, fantastical and ‘wholly believable’ alternative 19th century; a post-Darwinian universe of reworked, recycled, collaged and montaged Victorian photography and taxidermy. Her work is in the Royal Collection at Windsor and has been shown at Royal Academy of Art Summer Exhibitions. Her recent BBC Radio 4 drama series, Charlotte Brontë in Babylon, was a special commission to mark the bicentenary of the birth of Charlotte Brontë. She is the curator of the exhibition Charlotte Brontë at the Soane, currently at Sir John Soane's Museum.
In association with Sir John Soane’s Museum. Exhibition Charlotte Brontë at the Soane runs 15 March – 7 May.
