Leading writers pay tribute to Shakespeare and Cervantes

To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the near simultaneous deaths in 1616 of both Shakespeare and Cervantes, And Other Stories and Hay Festival have selected 12 contemporary international authors to write an original and previously unpublished story as their tribute to these giants of world literature.

Join a selection of writers including Vicente Molina Foix, Deborah Levy and Ben Okri  for an evening of readings and discussion hosted by Daniel Hahn.

The anthology, which will be available at the event, will comprise six English-speaking writers offering a take on Cervantes and his work, while six contemporary Spanish-language writers have written stories inspired by Shakespeare. The writers are Kamila Shamsie. Ben Okri, Deborah Levy, Yuri Herrera, Marcos Giralt Torrente, Juan Gabriel Vásquez, Vicente Molina Foix, Soledad Puértolas, Hisham Matar, Nell Leyshon, Rhidian Brook and Valeria Luiselli, with an introduction by Salman Rushdie.

Visit our Treasures Gallery where Imagining Don Quixote  is on display until 22 May 2016. Our major summer exhibition, Shakespeare in Ten Acts opens on 15 April 2016.

Presented in association with And Other Stories and Hay Festival and supported by the British Council, Instituto Cervantes and Acción Cultural Española
