If you have lost your Reader Pass, or it has expired, it’s easy to replace, renew or extend it.

How do I renew my Reader Pass?

To renew your British Library Reader Pass you need to come to the Library in person in London or Yorkshire. We recommend booking a Reader Pass renewal appointment using our online Box Office. If you don’t book an appointment, you may need to queue.

Book an appointment to renew your Pass

You can book your Reader Pass registration appointment at either of our sites:

If you do not already have one, you will need to create a Box Office account as part of the booking process. At your appointment we will check your identification documents, after which we’ll issue you with your new Reader Pass.

What documents you’ll need to bring

When you visit us to renew your Reader Pass, please bring two identification documents:

  • one showing proof of your home address (e.g. utility bill, bank statement or payslip)
  • one showing your signature (e.g. Passport or driving licence)

Help your appointment go smoothly

You will need to provide your Reader account username and password when you renew. If you can’t remember your details, try logging into My Account, where you can request a username reminder or a password reset. You'll be sent an email - click on the link provided within 24 hours and follow the onscreen instructions.

Extending your online account

If your Reader Pass has expired, you can extend it to continue pre-ordering collection items.

If you created a British Library Online Account before your Pass expired, and your account hasn’t already been extended, you can extend it yourself by logging into your Online Account using your username and password.

Once you’ve logged in:

  1. Select My Services
  2. Under Reader Registration, choose Edit Options
  3. Select Extend
