Photography is a powerful tool in the hands of a campaigner. We identify strongly with photographic images because we see a close representation of what we assume to be reality. However, photography is the selective framing of an event. In one brief moment, the photographer edits both space and time. An understanding of photography can help us to make our own images, and help us make them persuasive to the viewer.
This activity begins with a detailed look at particular photographs and contains two practical exercises that enable students to make their own photographs and posters for use in their campaigns.

The idea behind these exercises is that we actively use our bodies and emotions as a way of understanding how images work. The exercises follow on one from the other, starting off very gently. Each successive exercise adds a further layer of sophistication, until eventually, quite complex images are created. The role-play exercises are wordless and aim to use pictures in order to tell a story. These exercises are also useful at the beginning of a project, as a means of ideas creation and perhaps for gauging which issues are important to young people. During each exercise, a hand-held digital camera may be used to document the images being produced. The resulting photographs can then be used:
- as the basis for discussion and debate
- as a starting point for the subsequent photography topic
- in combination with graphics to make campaign posters
