Rostam fighting Arzhang

On his way to save King Kavus from captivity by demons, the hero Rostam encountered many dangers and trials.

This was his sixth trial: combating the demon Arzhang. Rostam and his guide Ulad had entered into the borders of a land called Mazanderan, which was controlled by demons. Ulad knew the spot where the demon Arzhang had pitched his tent.

In this image, Ulad is tied to a tree while Rostam wrestles with Arzhang. In the background is Arzhang’s tent and demons from his army watch the fight.

After Rostam had defeated the demon by cutting off its head, the other demons fled.

This is a Persian manuscript of the Shahname which dates from the 15th century. It has seventy two miniature illustrations showing characters and scenes from the epic. The artwork in this version of the Shahname is particularly fine.
