Rostam capturing Ulad

This image shows Rostam’s Fifth Heroic Trial: Combat with Ulad. Ulad was a local landowner and warrior. When he heard that Rostam had put his horse to graze in his fields and had assaulted one of his peasants, he decided to teach him a lesson. He gathered some soldiers to attack Rostam. However Rostam was so strong that he fought off the attack.

As seen in this image, he captured Ulad by using his royal lasso to noose his head. After he was captured, Ulad promised to lead Rostam to the White Demon and to help him free King Kavus from captivity.

This is a Persian manuscript of the Shahname which dates from the 15th century. It has seventy two miniature illustrations showing characters and scenes from the epic. The artwork in this version of the Shahname is particularly fine.
