Background

This Extract acts as an introduction to A Dictionary of the Slang and Cant Languages: Ancient and Modern, as used by every class of offenders . 'Cant' was a term for the language spoken by thieves.

George Andrewes intended to expose the meanings of 'slang and cant' words and phrases used by criminals, so that the public could better protect themselves from crime.
