Teacher's Notes

This topic concentrates on perhaps the most exciting and well-known event of the first Elizabethan age, the defeat of the Spanish Armada. This has been chosen because of the richness of the sources, and the particular perspectives from which they are produced.

Additional activities could include producing chronological sequences describing the events of the Armada; writing first-hand accounts from the perspectives of different participants (English and Spanish commanders; ordinary seamen; perhaps even the Queen herself); or plotting the major events and routes of the running battles on a large-scale map of the coast around Britain.
