A Description of New Lanark - attack on religion
The New Views of Mr Owen of Lanark
With regard to the declaration of universality of error in all Christian sects and establishments, which exist or have existed, it must be confessed, it is as far distant from that spirit of charity and benevolence which renders the works of Mr Owen in general interesting, as it is in its tendency inimical to a sacred principle of duty, imposed upon all individuals whose object is to befriend mankind; I mean the duty of prudence and caution in adopting, practising, and scrupulously pursuing every fair and honourable means, not to offend mankind, when the object of securing their attention is a necessary condition to the success of useful plans.
