This entry is interesting for the development of metaphoric uses of the verb surf. The use of surf, as in ‘surf the net', may be the most frequent use of the word in current UK contexts, and is cited as dating from 1992 in the 2001 additions (so it wasn't widely enough used to be entered in earlier versions of the OED). This detail in itself shows the complexity of maintaining a dictionary of the scope, comprehensiveness and contemporaneousness of the Oxford English Dictionary online.
