This article, written by Dickens on industrial safety and child labour, was published in the April 22, 1854 issue of Household Words. The piece looks at conditions in England's factories and the dangers to which child labourers were exposed. When this article was published, Dickens was also writing Hard Times, which focused on the Northern industrial city Coketown. Although Dickens used the novel to look at the factory-owning class and its promotion of 'facts', he does not directly describe industrial working conditions. Instead, he used his position as editor of Household Words to provide factual articles such as this one, so as to complement the subject matter of his fiction and thus reveal the realities of industrialisation to his readers.
