The Niger and the West Sudan - Page 89

Here the author provides advice on how to treat African servants. 'Natives', he writes, 'being overgrown children, should be liable to the same treatment as schoolboys in England. Punishment should be short, sharp - and forgotten at once.'

About The Niger  and the West Sudan

'The Niger and the West Sudan, or the West African's Note Book' was first published in 1910. It aimed to provide those new to West Africa with 'hints and suggestions as to what is required by Britons' in the region. The book includes historical and anthropological notes, information on living conditions, and Hausa phrases used in everyday conversation.
