In the first page of the preface the author explains that he has translated his work from Latin into English. He writes that the 'Nature and Vertues of the Baths of Bath...[are] most deservedly celebrated in all the Dominions of the Monarchy of Great Britain, and the Kingdom of Ireland.'

'The Register of Bath' was written by the Somerset physician Thomas Guidott, and was published in 1694. The book contains 200 accounts of patients' experiences in Bath, describing the healing effects of the town's 'famous Hot Waters.'
