Kairbaan is a leading scientist interested in cancer biology, particularly angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones, which is essential for tumour growth and cancer spread. Kairbaan completed her PhD at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, London in 1994, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT, Cambridge MA, USA. Kairbaan now works for Cancer Research UK, and is based at the Bart's Cancer Institute in London.
