Over 6 weeks, Year 8 students from South Camden Community School worked with DJ and poet Charlie Dark in a project inspired by the exhibition, Evolving English: One Language, Many Voices. This exhibition explored the history of the English language from 5th century runes to 21st century youth speak.
During the project, students looked at the links between language and identity and examined spoken language as a living thing. The project aimed to ignite young people’s interest in English and enable them to see themselves as active participants in language change. Through creative activities, students explored their favourite words and phrases; discussed what slang meant to them; and expressed their ideas through poems and spoken word. Their work was then collated into a fanzine, Boom-Ting!, and performed in front of an audience.
