Women in power
Not all women in medieval society were oppressed and subservient to men. Some medieval women exercised great power. In the church, women could hold positions of immense responsibility as abbesses of convents. In some instances, such as monasteries that housed communities of men and women, the abbess were in fact superior to the monks.
