Intro
The Declaration of Independence was a document approved by the American Congress on 4 July 1776, announcing the separation of thirteen North American British colonies (the nucleus of the future United States) from Great Britain. The 4 July is now known as Independence Day and is celebrated all over North America. The thirteen colonies had been at war with Britain since April 1775 and the American Revolution continued during 1775 and 1776. This illustration, published later in 1856 from 'The Life of George Washington', shows the Declaration of Independence being announced.
