Colour
plays a significant role in Armenian manuscript illumination. Red,
blue, black and green predominate in illuminations.
These
colours represent elements found in Solomon's Temple, the story
of which is in the Old Testament. Red on black, in the form of an
arch, can represent the blood of the martyrs. Blue, found sandwiched
between red and black, represents the spiritual aspect of our life
on earth. Green in manuscript illumination can represent renewal.
