Image of the Nativity and Prime, London Hours of William Lord Hastings, Master of the First Prayer book of Maximilian, Ghent (?), late 1470s, 165 x 125 mm, Add. MS 54782, ff. 106v-107
This volume is one of the most luxurious books of hours made in the southern Netherlands for an Englishman. It epitomises the commodification of the new naturalistic style of manuscript illumination. Although produced to the highest artistic standards, virtually every miniature is based on a pattern previously employed in either another manuscript or a panel painting. The same close associate of Edward IV had made a similar book of hours now in Madrid.
