Image of the Garden of Pleasure, from Le Roman de la Rose

Image of Garden of Pleasure, Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun, Le Roman de la Rose. Made for Engelbert II, count of Nassau and Vianden, Master of the Prayer books of circa 1500, Bruges, circa 1490-1500, 394 x 292 mm, Harley MS 4425, f. 12v
This richly illustrated copy of the secular text most often copied in the Middle Ages was produced at the very end of the manuscript tradition. Although its text was copied from a printed edition, its illustrations were the original creation of an anonymous Flemish illuminator who delighted in depicting scenes of courtly life. Particularly opulent are his depictions of the walled garden of Pleasure. Here the lover dressed in red and blue is depicted twice, first standing at the gate to the garden and then entering it.
