Image of Lydgate and the pilgrims leave Canterbury, John Lydgate Siege of Thebes, Lucas Horenbout (?), London (?), circa 1520-1530, 395 x 280 mm, Royal MS 18 D ii, f. 148 (detail)
Around the middle of the 15th century, English book producers began work on this large collection of English verses. Begun by Sir William Herbert and his wife, Anne Devereux, it was probably intended as a present for either Henry VI or Edward IV. The volume was, however, left uncompleted until much later. At that point Gerard Horenbout, by now resident in England, painted two miniatures in the book.
