The Lion and Dragon: Britain's first embassy to China

Narrative 12: Voyage

The composition of the Embassy had deliberately included men of literary, artistic and scientific talents who now came fully into their own. Even those unskilled in literary composition were sufficiently aware of the momentousness of their journey to publish what they saw.

Samuel Holmes, a Sergeant-Major of the Light Dragoons described the fortifications of the Great Wall.
