The Lion and Dragon: Britain's first embassy to China

Narrative 14: William Alexander - Picturesque Representations

The Chinese clearly confronted the same problems of civilisation, science and technology as Europeans did. What intrigued and fascinated the Embassy was how the Chinese dealt with these issues. For example, nautical and hydraulic technology, things at once familiar and deeply different. William Alexander, the junior draughtsman to the Embassy, took every opportunity to depict the life of China as he saw it around him.
