The Lion and Dragon: Britain's first embassy to China

Narrative 5: Voyage a la Chine

The last stage of the journey to Peking was made by road. After traversing the city, the Embassy was virtually confined to a series of grand lodgings in the suburban village of Haidian, near the Summer Palace.
