Drawing of the Jami' Masjid at Peshawar, in the North West Frontier Province. Inscribed on the front in Persian characters: 'Naqshah i masjid i jami' i Pashawar' (Picture of the cathedral mosque, Peshawar); on back in English: '11.' 'The Jama Masjid at Peshwar.' 1822 water-mark. The view shows the 'sahn' or courtyard of the mosque with the main sanctuary facade. It comprises a high central recessed arch or 'pishtaq' flanked by arcades on both sides and a battered minaret to either end. The congregational mosque or 'jami' masjid' is the venue for prayers each Friday at noon, when the entire local Muslim population gather together to hear the 'khutba' or sermon, given by the mosque's imam.
