Street scene probably in Lucknow, with shops and traders; a horseman with retainers is riding by.
Watercolour of a street scene probably in Lucknow by an anonymous artist working in the Lucknow style, c. 1800.
Lucknow is the state capital of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. Although Lucknow had been part of the Mughal Empire from the 16th century, by the late 18th century the Muslim Nawabs of Avadh had made the city their capital. It served as North India's cultural capital and the arts flourished and many buildings were erected under the Nawabs. This drawing is of a lively street scene, with shops and traders lining the street and a horseman with retainers riding by.
