Woman bathing. A lady of rank is seated on steps leading to a river; her hair is being dried by an old lady.
Watercolour drawing of a woman bathing by an anonymous artist working in the Lucknow style, c. 1800.
Lucknow is the state capital of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. Although Lucknow had been part of the Mughal Empire from the 16th century, by the late 18th century the Muslim Nawabs of Avadh had made the city their capital. There was a flowering of the arts under the Nawabs and the time period is recognised for its contribution to the painting tradition. This drawing shows a lady of rank seated on the steps leading down to a river. Her hair is being dried by an old lady, and two other maid-servants stand behind. Another lady is coming out of the water and in the distance elephants and guards are waiting.
