Pencil and wash drawing of the river bank of the Ganges or Bhagirathi (Bihar or Bengal) by Thomas (1749-1840) and William (1769-1837) Daniell, September 1788. Inscribed on the front in pencil is: '10'; on the back in ink: '33.'
Thomas Daniell and his nephew William arrived in Calcutta in 1786 and proceeded to complete studies and drawings of the scenery and architecture of the country for the next nine years. When they returned to Britain they engraved the album of views ‘Oriental Scenery’ for which they are best known.
