Pencil and wash drawing of a scene on the River Jumna near Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh) by Thomas (1749-1840) and William (1769-1837) Daniell, completed either on 17 December 1788 or on the return journey, c.30 October 1789. Inscribed on the front in pencil is: '45'; on the back in ink: '24'; in pencil: 'On the Jumna near Allahabad.'
Thomas Daniell and his nephew William arrived in Calcutta in 1786 and proceeded to complete studies and drawings of the scenery and architecture of the country for the next nine years. When they returned to Britain they engraved the album of views ‘Oriental Scenery’ for which they are best known.
