Medium: Pencil on paper
Pencil drawing of a hill near Narsapur in Karnataka by Thomas (1749-1840) and William (1769-1837) Daniell, 26 April 1792. Inscribed on the back in ink is: '42. near Nursipoor - Banglre.'; and in pencil: 'Near Nursypore between Colar & Oscotta. 26 Apl. 1792.'
Thomas Daniell and his nephew William arrived in Calcutta in 1786 and spent the following nine years travelling through virtually unknown parts of India observing and recording with skill and accuracy the varied scenery and architecture they encountered. William kept a journal which, along with the notes inscribed on their pencil drawings, colour wash, watercolours and oil paintings, provided a thorough record of this beautiful country for an eager western audience at home.
