Pencil and wash drawing of Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh by Stanley Leighton (1837-1901), 25 November 1868. Inscribed on the mount in pencil is: 'Kussowlie between Simla and the plains.' 'Wed. 25 Nov. 1868.'

Kasauli is situated near to Shimla on the summit of a long ridge overlooking the Kalka at an elevation of 6,335 feet above sea level. In 1842 a British military cantonment was founded here, however by the late 19th century the village had a sizable civilian population and was a popular destination for European people escaping the heat of the Indian plains.
