View of Bijaigarh (U.P.). 25 December 1868
Artist: Leighton, Stanley (1837-1901)
Medium: Pencil on paper
Pencil drawing by Stanley Leighton of the view of Bijaigarh (U.P.), dated 25 December 1868. Inscribed on front in pencil: 'Bijegurh. Mirzapore district. Christmas Day, 1868'.
The Fort of Bijaigarh perched on top of a mountain, overlooks the vast plain and high rocks. In 1781 William Hodges was sent by his patron, Warren Hastings, to witness the siege of Bijaigarh by Major Popham and was the first artist to draw views of the fort. At this time, Indian rebel Raja Chait Singh had wrested control of the fort from the British. Popham's siege was a success, although Chait Singh managed to escape to Gwalior.
