Artist: Leighton, Stanley (1837-1901)
Medium: Pencil on paper
Pencil and wash drawing of the palace at Stok by Stanley Leighton (1837-1901) in January 1869. Inscribed on the front in pencil is: 'Stok. The palace of the ex-rajah Ladakh, from a sketch by Dr. H. Cayley. Jan 1869. S.L.'
This four-storey palace is situated at the top of a huge moraine of pebbles swept down from the mountains in the modern-day state of Jammu and Kashmir, 10 kilometres south of Leh. The palace was built in the early nineteenth century when the King of Ladakh was deposed by invading Dogra forces and was the official residence of the Ladakhi royal family.
