Water-colour painting from the MacKenzie Collection of the Palace at Ramanadapuram by an unknown artist, c.1784. Inscribed on the front in ink is: 'View of Ramanadaporam & Palace.'

The Ram Vilas Palace, at Ramnad or Ramanadapuram in Tamil Nadu, was built in the late 17th century and belonged to the Sethupathi Rajas. The palace houses oil paintings of the Rajas and the ceilings and walls are decorated with early 18th century murals depicting subjects such as business meetings with the English, and battles with the Maratha Sarabhoji, as well as scenes from epics.
