Water-colour drawing of the east view of the Mahadeo Temple near Sarnath, dated 1789-1820. Inscribed on the front in ink: 'East View of Mahdeo near Saara Neat.'

Sarnath, 10 kilometres north of Varanasi in Uttar pradesh, is an important Buddhist pilgrimage place as it is believed that Buddha preached his First Sermon there, known as 'Turning the Wheel of the Law'. This drawing depicts a small Hindu temple near Sarnath with a curvilinear tower built in the Northern Indian style of architecture. The area is also important to Hindus as the Ganges which is the most sacred river in India, flows close by.
