Wash drawing of a temple on a rock at Veramallai, near Tiruchchirapalli, dated 1815. Inscribed on back in ink: 'Pagoda on a Rock. At Vera Mallai near Trichinopoly. On the right a Choultry. The steps lead to the botton of a Reservoir of water called a Tank. On the left a species of Banyan Tree. The Trees near the Pagoda are Cotton Trees. Sketched in March 1815. This done in June. For J.C.N.'

This drawing depicts a tall pyramidal temple gopura or entrance tower, typical of the architecture of Tamil Nadu. This site is near Tiruchchirapalli, an important Hindu centre since the Chola times for its strategic position as it is also dominated by a huge granite rock.
