Pencil, pastel and wash drawing of ruins at Lucknow by Nicholas Chevalier (1828-1902) dated 23 February 1870. Inscribed on the front in pencil is: 'Lucknow. 23.2.70.'
Lucknow is the state capital of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. It came to prominence under the Mughals and during their rule became a flourishing centre for the arts. Supported by the wealth of the royal court many fine palaces, tombs and mosques were erected mostly dating from the mid-18th century onwards. It is regarded as one of the finest cities in India with a rich architectural heritage.
