Watercolour by William Robert Houghton (1826-1897) of the river and ghat at Sarkhej, near Ahmadabad in Gujarat, dated 27th November 1874. The image is inscribed on the front in ink: 'Sirkhej. Nov. 27/74. W.R.H.'. During the reign of Muhmmad Shah (r.1442-51) a mausoleum and mosque were erected in memory of Shaikh Ahmad Khattri (d.1446) at Sarkhej where the Shaikh had lived and died. Later the area became a retreat for the rulers of Gujarat, as well as an imperial necropolis. Palaces, gardens, pavilions and gateways were built around an artificial lake that is fed by a channel to the west of the mosque. This view shows a balcony projecting from the southern side of the mosque over the water with ghats of the lake in the distance.
