Pencil and wash drawing by Thomas and William Daniell of a Date palm '(Phoenix Dactylifera).'

The Date Palm is known in Hindi as Kajur tree and in Sanskrit as Pinda Karjura. Its botanichal name is Phoenix- Dactylifera and it belongs to the Palm or Coconut Family (Palmae or Palmaceae). It produces dates, very nutritious and highly saccharine fruits.

This is one of the very large collection of working drawings that Thomas and William Daniell amassed during the seven years spent sketching in India, from 1786 to 1793. The drawings were later used for their aquatints and oil paintings.
