Water-colour painting of the lake at Naini Tal in Uttar Pradesh by Charles J. Cramer-Roberts (1834-1895), 9 October 1886. Inscribed on front in ink: 'Naini Tal. Oct 9/86. C.J.C.R.'

Naini Tal is situated 6,400 feet above sea level in the Kumaon Hills of the Himalayas around a sacred lake which forms the focal point of the town. In the 19th Century Naini Tal was a district of British India and summer headquarters of the government of the province. It was a popular retreat for the residents of the plains and would have provided a welcome respite from the harsh Indian sun. There were several European schools, a barracks and a sanatorium here. The area is, however subject to landslides and a serious catastrophe of this kind occurred in September 1880.
