Illustration of the sluice at the Kankaria Tank at Ahmadabad, in Gujarat from James Burgess' 'Original Drawings [of] Muhammadan Architecture of Ahmadabad.' The tank, located in south-eastern part of Ahmadabad, is found near the Rayapur Gate, and was devised as an artificial lake expanding to approximately 76 acres. The Kankaria sluice is composed of ?three circular openings or inlets, while the divisions between the ends of the face are carved with all the care bestowed on the minarets and buttresses of the mosques and in the same pattern? a sluice would be so distinctly considered a piece of engineering masonry, that the builder would scarcely dream of making it pleasing architectural feature, yet here it is done.?
