Water-colour painting of a mountain village near Kilar, Chamba by Baden Henry Baden-Powell (1841-1901) c.1872. Inscribed on the front in ink is: '(Chamba State) Village just beyond Kilar, Valley of Upper Chenab'; on the mount in pencil: 'A Hill Village on the Mountain above Kilar. Province of Pangi (Chamba State). B.H. Baden-Powell. C.I.E.'
This village is situated in the Pangi Valley in the upper part of Chamba District, Himachal Pradesh. The valley is located between the Pir Panjal and the Greater Himalayan Zanskar ranges and is cut off from the rest of the world for a large part of the year except for the late summer when it is accessible through several passes. Chamba is the centre of the high pastures where the Gaddis or local shepherds bring their flocks in the summer before retreating to the Kangra valley in wintertime.
