'Small Building - close to the 'Dundeo' Temple - containing a statue of Sakya Sinha Buddha. Nov. 1854'
Artist: Oldfield, Henry Ambrose (1822-1871)
Watercolour of a small building near the Dhando Chaitya at Pasupati in Nepal, by Henry Ambrose Oldfield (1822-1871), dated November 1854. The image is inscribed: 'Small Building - close to the 'Dundeo' Temple - containing a statue of Sakya Sinha Buddha. Nov. 1854. vol. 2, p.227'.
Dr Oldfield, who was Residency Surgeon at Kathmandu from 1850-1863, wrote in 'Sketches from Nipal, Historical and Descriptive...' (1880), "On the north side of the temple is a small detached building with a tiled roof, in which is placed, upon a stone pedestal, a seated image of Sakya Singha Buddha. He has no supporters, but a small figure of the vajra is carved on a slab in front of the pedestal. There is no date or inscription about the figure by which its age can be judged. It is in very good preservation, and is not, probably, more than one hundred and fifty or two hundred years old."
