Pencil drawing of Maharajah Jung Bahadur's House at Godavari in Nepal, by Henry Ambrose Oldfield (1822-1871), dated March 1863. The image is inscribed: 'Godowry, March 1863' and on the original mount: 'Jung Buhadour's House at Godowry. March 1863'.

Maharajah Sir Jang Bahadur (1816-1877) was Prime Minister and Commander-In-Chief of Nepal from 1846 to 1877. Dr Oldfield was Residency Surgeon at Kathmandu from 1850-1863. After his death his family published, in two volumes, his 'Sketches from Nipal, Historical and Descriptive...' (1880), which described life at the court of the Maharajah Jung Bahadur and also contained descriptions of Buddhist architecture, together with illustrations from Oldfield's own drawings.
