Watercolour over pencil drawingof the source of the Krishna River by William Simpson dated 1865. The image is inscribed "Source of the Krishna River. Wm. Simpson 1865". Simpson visited the source of the Krishna River, north of Mahabaleshwar on 23 December 1861 and wrote in his 'Autobiography', "From Bombay I went to Poona, and from Poona to Mahabaleshwar. There I saw the source of the Krishna, where a small stream flows into a tank from a cow's head formed of stone - another "Cow's Mouth.""
